What is the largest possible context for the practice of Chinese medicine in the 21st century? How will Chinese medicine help humanity to face the challenges that confront us today? Chinese medicine has remained relevant for 4000 years because it has continually evolved to help humanity rise to meet the challenges that confronted us throughout history. In the past, the greatest selective pressures on planetary life existed externally to us in the form of environmental conditions. Now, human choice constitutes the greatest selective pressure. The challenges that confront us today stem from the fact that our ethical development as a species has not risen to the level of our intellectual development. From the perspective of any holistic/integral medicine it is the nature of what motivates those choices that must concern us. What are the most significant imbalances of our time and how can Chinese medicine help?
The highest potential of Chinese medicine lies in its ability to assist in the evolution of consciousness. In this context I will examine the ability of Chinese medicine to remove stagnation (ignorance) and promote open awareness. I will discuss the clinical discernment of the authentic self from ego as the basis of health and illness respectively. We will examine from the perspective of Chinese physiology the mechanism of how we create the illusion of a separate self and then eventually come to embody that illusion as illness. Within this context I will discuss the integration of the five-element and eight-principles traditions. Constitutional diagnosis will be examined as an organizing framework that yields deep insights into each patient's destiny and path of healing. The nature of specific acupuncture point functions as they impact awareness will also be discussed.
Topics Include:
- Chinese medicine as a science of conscious awareness.
- Destiny and Constitutional Type.
- The Relationship Between Chinese Cosmology & Physiology.
- Inner Functions of Acupuncture Points, Herbal formulas, and Point Combinations.
- The Suggestive Process in Therapy.
- Diagnosis by Color, Sound, Odor & Emotion.
- The Relationship between the Five-elements and Eight-Principles.
- Practical exercises in diagnosis.

Chinese Medicine and the Evolution of Consciousness
by Lonny Jarrett
Saturday and Sunday, June 16 & 17, 2007
Abstract:
This orientation represents an important perspective that has been all but lost in the modern practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A basic premise of Chinese Medicine is to move stagnation before tonifying. There is no greater stagnation in life than having forgotten one’s true self. Chinese physiology will be presented from the perspective of spiritual evolution. Five-element constitutional diagnosis will be examined as an organizing framework that yields deep insights into each patient’s destiny and path of healing.

Pulse and Constitutional Diagnosis 10.27 & 10.28
1. Saturday: Integrated Diagnosis
In this class I will present the nature of the intake from the perspective of both the Five-element and Eight-principle traditions as they complement each other. Every clinical interaction is an opportunity for diagnosis and the furthering of healing. I will examine the intake process as it evolves from hearing the patient’s voice on the answering machine, through the first diagnostic session, to watching them walk away from the office after the first session. The opportunity that diagnosis offers for initiating healing will be emphasized throughout. Class exercises in doagnostic skills will also be featured.
Sunday:
Pulse Diagnosis
This class will lay the foundation for a broad and deep appreciation of pulse diagnosis. We will concentrate on the big picture by looking at the whole pulse, comparing the left to the right side, and looking at the three depths and three heaters. We will focus on the issue of stability on the pulse and the implications of changes in rate, rhythm, amplitude and intensity.
